Rustic Cakes and Desserts
Rustic Birch Cakes
Rustic cakes can be both stunning and elegant, even though they feature simple elements from nature. This four-tiered birch tree wedding cake is covered in birch bark fondant, and features a carved heart with the couples’ initials. The looped burlap bow is a beautiful focal point, and the sugar wildflowers in shades of lavender add color and depth. Interior flavors include chocolate cake with vanilla Italian meringue, red velvet with lemon cream cheese, and vanilla with hazelnut.
This gorgeous Winter Birch Wedding Cake features three tiers with winter and holiday elements. Edible pinecones, holly leaves and berries accent the birch theme. Two snowy birds sit atop this wintry dessert, while a flowing fondant ribbon is draped beneath them. The couples’ initials are carved into the cake for an added rustic element.
This two-tiered birch cake was created especially for Christmas. Holly leaves and berries add winter color to the topsy turvy shape. Interior flavors include vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream.
Speaking of topsy turvy, this one has three tipsy tiers and features pinecones and carved initials of the guests of honor. A sparkling number 40 appears on the top tier to celebrate a special birthday. The realistic accents make it the focal point of any party!
Continuing with our birch theme, this three-tiered beauty was designed for a baby shower. Wild sugar flowers add even more natural touches, along with minty green sage leaves. Interior flavors included coconut with lemon buttercream, vanilla with vanilla buttercream, and red velvet with cream cheese filling. Want to try some of our amazing flavors for yourself? Looking to plan a smaller party or perhaps you prefer cupcakes? We incorporated a birch theme into this cake topper for a first birthday. Along with the cake we included cupcakes on our small cupcake stand.
Rustic Floral Elements
Sugar flowers can add even more of a natural element to rustic cakes, and the benefit of sugar flowers is that you can create any flower for any season! This rustic themed sunflower wedding cake featured fall colors that matched the couple’s invitations. Sunflowers, black magic roses, circus roses, green hydrangea and seeded eucalyptus accent each tier. Fondant ribbon encircles each tier. Interior flavors included vanilla cake with strawberry and nutella buttercream, red velvet cake with lemon cream cheese and raspberry buttercream, and vanilla cake with hazelnut buttercream.
This three-tiered monogrammed wedding cake comes to life with a cascading branch of autumn leaves. The couple’s monogrammed initials decorate the top tier.
We’ve made similar rustic cakes with cascading flowers, including this three-tiered wedding cake with satin brown ribbons around the base of each tier. A bold monogram celebrates the couple on the top tier.
And then there’s this elegant four-tiered wedding cake, also with cascading autumn branches, but no monogram. The interior flavors were as amazing as the exterior! They included chocolate cake with peanut butter, lemon cake with cream cheese and raspberry chambord, and white cake with two layers of hazelnut filling and one layer of chocolate filling.
Unique Rustic Cakes and Cake Pops
Sometimes rustic cakes can feature more than one dessert! This unique treat contained both cake and cake pops! Instead of a traditional burlap bow, this cake incorporated burlap details, including burlap flowers, and ivory with lace burlap. Not only is this cake rustic, but it has a country chic flair to it, as well. The cake pops finish off the final tier, dipped in chocolate with white drizzle, alternated with vanilla dipped pops in white chocolate with white delicate pearls. Want to see more of our cake pops? Rustic elements can also be added through subtle textures and patterns. This Buttercream Wedding Cupcake Tower featured elegant cupcakes in filigree wrappers, and a cake topper adorned with sugar flowers. In order to give the cake a subtle, rustic look, the buttercream was decorated with natural swirls and strokes. The cake topper and cupcakes were entirely gluten-free. Along with the cupcakes and cake topper, 40 french macarons were also included for guests. Chalkboard Inspired Cakes
The chalkboard style is another popular style for rustic themed events. Set against a dark background with hand painted designs fashioned to mimic chalk, this style was popularized by fellow baker Lizo Marek. Incidentally if you are in the business of baking cakes, she has a great online rustic and chalkboard class which we reviewed here at Pink Cake Box University.
Up first is this fun and adorable barnyard themed cake for Collins first birthday. The second tier of the cake includes Collins name along with several flags in chalkboard print.
Cakes aren’t the only medium where the chalkboard aesthetic works – cookie favors offer an excellent palette for artistic designs.
For this next chalkboard inspired cake we worked with Kristin from Details I Do to help design this wedding cake for a country chic wedding shoot in Hopewell NJ at Boxwood Farms. The cake includes several rustic elements including sugar wildflowers, burlap ruffles and hand drawn chalk designs in gray against a black chalkboard backdrop
Whether your event is held indoors or out, rustic cakes can bring a touch of nature to any celebration!
