Mama Khoob’s Parrot Tulip Extravaganza Cake! (2447)
We surprised my mother this weekend with a petite surprise party at The Bernard’s Inn. It was a “big” birthday so I wanted to do something special…
Year’s ago, my mom and I saw a gorgeous 17th century Delft Tulip Vase filled with fabulous parrot tulips. I kept the picture in my ‘one day I will make a cake like this’ pile. Well, I couldn’t think of a better event to make this cake – especially because my mom loves parrot tulips and has a ridiculous green thumb!
The whole vase was hand-painted in a blue “Delft-inspired” floral pattern. The tulips were also hand-painted, dusted and airbrushed to give them a realistic and colorful look.
The cake was comprised of two different flavors: Almond sour cream cake filled with dark chocolate Amaretto Italian meringue and chocolate ganache and Chocolate cake filled with almond cream cheese and raspberry chambord Italian meringue.
I also created a dessert table filled with macarons, to celebrate her years teaching French, red velvet mini cupcakes with Scrabble tiles, to commemorate her agility with words, “Nana” cake pops, my Nana’s famous cookies, milk and cookies and favorite chocolates from the Cape. We finished the evening off with individual crumb cake favors that were made from my Aunt Vivian’s famous recipe!
A special thank you to Bonnie at The Bernard’s Inn for making the event so beautiful and having patience with my “Type A” personality 🙂 And to Deirdre and Paul at Paul Michael Designs for the absolutely FABULOUS floral arrangements!!!
To my mom (a.k.a. Mama Khoobs) – Happy Birthday! You know how much I love you and I am forever grateful for all of your love, support and humor. But most of all, thank you for being my role model and best friend. You are a true inspiration.
Here’s a video of the cake I shot at the bakery:
